AIR IN HONG KONG THICK WITH WILDEST RUMOURS
IN HONG KONG TO-DAY, the air is thick with rumours, nine-tenths of which are absolutely untrue and unjusti- fied. A good example is being set by the Chinese popu- lation, which is taking matters far more calmly than many Europeans.
In response to Government suggestion, the passport offices are crowded with people while in many of the banks equally large crowds have gathered to draw out money. The women of Hong Kong are tak- ing the Postmaster-General's warn- ing to "be prepared" very seriously. Many of them stayed up to a late hour last night, packing and getting their affairs in order so as to be ready for any evacuation.

ZOO WILL EXPEL ITS HIPPOS
The Calcutta Zoo has decided to dis- pose of its two hippopotamuses which have been a great attraction for some -weeks.
The reason for the public interest in these animals is that one of them de- voured a young Hindu woman who who feeding him. The beast, which has an uncertain temper, suddenly seized the woman's arm and pulled 'her over the low barrier.
The authorities tried to make it im- possible for such a tragedy to be re- peated by raising the wall, but the foundation sank several feet, so the hippotamuses are to go to the high- est bidder.
