PRISON WITHOUT BARS
Tanganyika has a prison with no bars, no cells, and no walls, and the prisoners don't try to escape because they prefer to stay where they are.

SURRENDERED
Only one of them ever "escaped." He quarrelled with the European war- der, so he walked eighteen miles to another prison and gave himself up.

Mr. D. J. Ni Anderson, instructed by Mr. W. M. Brown, appeared for the second and third defendants.

The Chinese revenue officers were disguised as farmers, dressed in dark clothing, (with the legs of their trousers rolled up) and big bamboo hats. Mr. Col- ledge and Mr. Taylor followed after getting into a catchwater.
Wong Chui-to, one of the Revenue officers, was a few paces ahead of his colleague and on nearing the hut was attracted by the characteristic smell of heroin pills. He opened the door -and saw seven persons. He was asked what he wanted and in reply told them not to move as an Inspector was coming to inspect.
ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE
On hearing this, the inmates tried to rush the door but the revenue -officer placed his hands across the en- -trance. He was not able to prevent
two men from escaping.
These two ran up the hill, but were -seen by the other Chinese · Revenue officer who arrested one of them, the third accused.
Wong Chui-to managed to keep the other five in the hut. Second accused attempted to escape through a win- dow. He was seen and stopped. Mr. Taylor and R. O. Colledge then arriv- ed and they found the place was be-: ing used as a heroin pill factory,
Evidence of the raid was given by the Chinese Revenue officers, Mr. W. Colledge and Mr. H. A. Taylor.
Revenue officer Wong, questioned by Mr. Anderson stated that the se- cond and third accused were in the hut at the time of his arrival, and -not outside.
The case is proceeding.
