BRITAIN'S MOOD OF QUIET

DETERMINATION

London, To-day.

The an-

THE KING IS RETURNING to London.

nouncement, which came early in the afternoon of a day of great political activity, gave the key to the mood in which the British Government and people are confronting the anxieties of the Euro- pean situation.

No time is being lost in giving effect to the intention disclosed in the statement issued on Tuesday night after the meeting of the Cabinet of put- ting the nation's constitutional; administrative and defence machinery, in a state of readiness to meet any emergency and to honour the coun- try's international obligations.

Departmental orders issued yester- day are forerunners of the legislative provisions forecast the previous night, and which, it may be anticipated from conferences with the Opposition lead- er, will prove to be of an agreed

character.

Messages received in London indi- cate that these precautionary steps are matched in measures to be tak- en in other parts of the British Com- monwealth of Nations.

AUDIENCE THIS MORNING

An announcement issued from Buckingham Palace yesterday after- noon stated: "In view of the special meeting of Parliament the King has decided to return to London and will travel south to-night. A meeting of the Privy Council will be held at Buckingham Palace to-morrow morn- ing."

The Prime Minister will have an audience of His Majesty this morning. The Queen and the Princesses will remain at Balmoral for the present. -British Wireless.
