Shanghai, To-day. The population in the Japanese- controlled area of Shanghai, including Hongkew, Yangtsepoo and Chapel, has taken an immense upward jump as a result of the vastly increased cost of living in the International Settle- ment and the French Concession.

The latest census compiled by the Japanese-sponsored municipal author- ities, who nominally control the occu- pied areas outside the two foreign zones, shows a population of 1,007,- 105 people, or an increase of about 40,000 over the figure a month ago.

In view of the fact that thousands of Chinese continue to move out of the foreign areas, the Japanese-run regime is reported to be considering a authorities to request to the French re-open the iron gates separating the Concession from Nantao, the Chinese area adjoining the Concession, so that former residents of the Chinese dis- trict may return to their homes with the minimum amount of difficulty.

In normal times the gates are al- ways open, but since the beginning of the hostilities here in 1937 they have been closed.--Reuter.

TRAFFIC FINES

Admitting the summons but saying that he did not think his car had ob- structed anything, J. J. Cameron, of the Green Island Cement Company, Limited, was this morning - fined for parking his car, No. 809, in Cas- tie Peak Road, near the Ruttonjee's House.

The extent to which the "Open Door" in China has been closed against the United States, Ger- many and Great Britain by the Japanese Invasion and occupation of China's maritime provinces is shown by an analysis of returns just issued by the Chinese Mari- time Customs covering the first

half of 1939.

During the six months ended June 30, 1939, Japanese imports into China,

at valued £10,247,547, constituted total 31. per cent, of the country's imports. During the corresponding period last year, Japan's share of the total was only 19.99 per cent.

American imports into China dur- ing the first half of this year, valued at £6,770,615, represented 15.46 per compared with cent. of the total, 19.36 per cent. last year.
