H.K. SWIMMER WINS 50 YARDS FREE STYLE

*

Shanghai, August 16-No new records were register- ed at the Foreign Y.M.C.A. annual swimming gala which took place last night at the association's pool, although some close and thrilling results were witnessed. For the first time in Shanghai swimming history, a Chinese swimmer assumed a local title, when L. C. Wen won the 50 yards free style in 26 2/5 seconds and Z. K. Lok ran off with the 880. yards crown, indicating thereby the vast progress made by Chinese swimmers recently.

The most exciting race of the day was the men's 50 yards free style Shanghai championship which brought practically every fin- alist to the finish together. So close was the result that the judges, after, deliberation, reversed their earlier declalon that Z. K. Lok had won the title, giving, first place to C. L. Wen, former Hong Kong swimmer, with L. Oliviera second and Z. K. Lok third. Archie Logan was fourth. The time of 26-2/5 seconds was the slowest re- corded for many years.

FALSE START

A large crowd turned out for the function and the Foreign Y.M.C.A. natatorium was crowded to capacity. Promptly on time the events were started off, the men's 50 yards free style seeing only four entries as Ernie Smith's injuries prevented him from taking part. A false start held up proceedings, but Len Bright sent the finalists off eventually to a fine start. Z. K. Lok had the best of the start and went out ahead with L. Oliveira
