STREAMLINED FIGURES

Ankles And Calves

BY DONALD LOOMS

Jean Chatburn has her hands on my shoulders for this exercise, but she could do it by placing them against a wall. She stands as far as she can from me (or the wall), and slants forward; then she comes up on her

toes and then lowers her heels to

the floor. As she lowers her beels there is a definite pull on the Achilles tendon, and the exercise tends to strengthen the ankles, develop the calves and give a girl that streamlined leg so much admired

Women need this exercise more than men do, because women wear high heels and the unnatural position of their feet weakens the shin-bone

muscles.

If you really want streamlined legs you must work to get them. The big- gest who are sent to me to be put in condition for a screen test is that they are apt to be overenthusiastic at the beginning, especially if they are not used to exercise. They overdo them the first day of so, and try to accom- plish in one night or so what will take at least six weeks. Then they are sore and stiff and discouraged.

"Oh, what's the use" they say. "I did the exercise and I feel a million years old!"

If they would do them correctly, following instructions, they would get better results.

Mr. Loomis is physical director of the stars at Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer Studios. He has charge of such stars as Joan Crawford, Jeanette MacDonald, Norma Shearer, Robert Taylor, Clark Gable and Robert Montgomery.

Eleanor comes to me, however, for work for the rest of her body, for she feels that dancing alone will not be sufficient.

Don't make a struggle of it, but feel as if you were a fish, who makes no effort. If this is done correctly, you will develop long, graceful, relaxed muscles from your swimming instead of knotty bulges.

Here's an exercise that will do ex- cellent things for your legs:

Sit on a table. Extend your legs straight out in front of you; holding them stiff, swing them up and down. Now, both legs out straight as before, hold right leg stiff, cross the left one over it, then swing them in that post tion. Alternate legs and repeat,

While you are doing this, remember to hold yourself in correct up-right posture.
