ONLY 10,000 CHINESE

NEED

SUPPORT

THERE ARE LESS THAN 10,000 Chinese war refugees in Shanghai now who have to be entirely dependent on philanthropy and when this figure is compared with the big number of 400,000 refugees during and soon after the hos- tilities in and around the city it will at once be realised how efficiently the Chinese have adapted themselves to the pre- sent most trying period. While most of the former re- fugees have been able to support themselves, now many of them can make their living through the various relief measures worked out by relief workers, says the "North- China Daily News."

Of course there are sometimes some management of Christian bodies, it is odd refugees coming from time to stated.

The biggest refugee camp now under the committee is the one built by the committee itself, after obtaining permission from the Shang- hai Municipal Council. It is in Tun- sin Road where 7,690 refugees are cared for. The second big one is in Yengping Road where 4,117 refugees live. In this latter camp 3,190 refu- gees are self-supporting, which fact shows that relief workers have not only been feeding them but also edu- cating them so that they can earn their living. The Refugee Factory in Sinza Road has made an important contribution in this respect.
