NARROW ESCAPE IN

WUCHOW BOMBING

Wuchow, To-day.

Details have just become known of the narrow escape of two

American missionaries during the Japanese bombing of Wuchow.

A clear analysis and reaffirmation of the British Government's policy towards China has been sent to Sir Archibald Clark-Kerr, the Ambas-was sador in Chungking, for transmission to the Chinese Government in Chungking, writes the diplomatic correspondent of "The Times" this morning.

It includes points from Mr. Chamberlain's speech, but perhaps more fully, and shows that the British attempt to face the facts in North China means in no way that our policy in China is being altered, or to put it bluntly that China is being let down.

In London, it is recognised that the Tokyo negotia- tions have reached the decisive stage, adds the correspondent.

The missionaries, one of whom

lady, were on a boat in the river ready to leave Wuchow, when the raid was carried out.
