SEVEN POINTS IN FAVOUR OF HOUSE WORK

There are seven reasons why girls should take to domestic service. That is the opinion of Glouces- ter's Education Committee.

The committee set out the points while putting forward a new scheme for wages and conditions. Here they are:

PUBLIC GUILLOTINE BANNED

Executions in France are no longer to be held in public. In future they will take place in the courtyard of a prison and will be attended only by a magistrate, po- lice, official witnesses and a priest. In the past murderers have been guillotined in a side street in the presence of Press representatives and those in possession of special permits. The general public was not allowed to approach too close, but could frequently ser detail of the execution.

Particularly was this true of the execution of Eugen Weid- mann, the mass murderer. A huge crowd gathered at an ear- ly hour and demonstrated on ac-· count of the delay. Paris and London

newspapers published gruesome photographs, and pu- blic indignation was stirred.

work and there was no standing off when trade was slack.

2. They get food and, if in resi- dent service, a home as well as wages.

3. The training would teach to manage a home of their own.

4. Reasonable time off would be allowed and a holiday with pay

every year.

5. They would keep themselves from the beginning and need not be a burden to their parents.

6. Domestic service is a highly skilled occupation,

7. It is healthy, and nothing is more important than good health.

The committee found that the chief reasons for the unpopularity of domestic service

among girls were:-
