THE CHINA MAIL, JULY 25, 1988.

NO FAR EASTERN MUNICH--CHIANG

Chungking, To-day. General Chiang Kai-shek has issued a lengthy statement expressing confidence that Britain, as much as she desires a peaceful settlement of the Tientsin dispute, can only make concessions such as will not conflict with China's interests or the provisions of the Nine-Power Pact. At the same time, the Generalissimo emphasised that any understanding affecting China arriv- ed at between Britain and Japan without the cognisance and approval of the Chinese Gov- ernment, can have no validity whatever and can, in fact, never be put into effect.

The statement was made in an address at the week-

JAP. BARBARITY IN KWANGTUNG

Liuhuang, Kwangtung, To-day.

A grim sight was seen by the Chinese troops who re-entered Tenghai, at the entrance of the Han River in east Kwangtung 12- miles north-east of Swatow, on July 22.

More than 100 headless bodies of men and women were found in the premises of the Tenghai Middle necessary to watch the School. They are believed to have

ed owing to last night's Japanese air raid.

The Generalissimo expressed]

the conviction that there could be no question of a Far Eastern Munich.

"We cannot give any credence to the possibility that Britain is really compromising_with_Japan, who is no longer her Far Eastern ally of 20 years ago but rather a madman turning against his for- mer benefactors.

UNTHINKABLE

"It is unthinkable that Britain should faithlessly associate her- self with Japanese aggression, and we refuse to pay attention to suggestions that this unbelievable change in face has taken place."

General Chiang Kai-shek gave an assurance that the Chinese Government would maintain the value of national currency and supply of foreign exchange for purposes of legitimate transac- tions.

CALM CONFIDENCE The Generalissimo said that the fall in the currency would not impair China's ability for resist- ance as long as she laid up ade- quate stores of military material and set aside foreign exchange to meet the need for replenish- ment without the necessity of converting her gold reserves.

He concluded by stating that China relied upon herself to en- compass the enemy's destruc- tion, which was a task in which she was calmly confident. Reuter.
