Mongolia. There is no other part of the world where one may pass through four puppet states in 24 hours of travel. Yet we have just done it here, in a journey from Peking to Paotou in western Inner Mongolia.

Our train carried us northward from Peking, through the territory of the Chinese provisional govern- ment, rugged Nankow pass and the meandering Great Wall of China. There, at the traditional boundary between China and Mon- golia, we chugged through bleak, grassy hills on to the plateau of South Chahar, which has a flag and government of its own.
