MR. J. ROOSEVELT'S ADVENTURE: ONCE TOVAL MISTAKEN FOR A CONVICT
Mr. Joseph Kennedy, the Ameri-¡man once said that France was a can Ambassador, told. a story of state of mind. The best definition how Mr. James Roosevelt, son of of Wales' I can give you is to say the U. S. President, was once, mis that, it is something which is found taken, in Wales, for an escaped-con- in the heart of a Welshman.” vict

CLOCK "LOST"
72 YEARS
"Jimmy," he continued, "told me of an experience in one of your cities. It seems that he went. as- hone one day after a tempestuous voyage from a neighbouring port, mislay a clock with a Sft, face and wearing a pull-over sweater with his school numerals, 1930, sewn on
mechanism which includes weights of 32cwt. the back.
"On the way into town he noticed that he was being followed by a fairly goodsized crowd of people. This crowd got larger as they went along, until finally Jimmy began to get a bit worried.
"He thought that he had better ask a policeman what he had done to attract such attention. The po- liceman looked first at Jimmy, then at the crowd, then at the numbers on Jimmy's back. "You had better take off that sweater, sir,' he said. "They think that you are an escaped criminal."
NOT ON THE MAPS
Mr. Kennedy said he had found the greatest difficulty in finding out anything about Wales. None of the maps at the Embassy even showed ́it as a separate entity.
Then he tried his friends, One of them told him it was the place -Lloyd George came from.......
"That fact," Mr. Kennedy obser- ved, "and. I speak in all sincerity and seriousness, would justify the existence of any country and should give any country pride: Wales shall never be forgotten while it produces men of such distinction and character,”

You would not think it possible to
It has happened at Preston. Back in 1867 a new town hall, was built to replace the one erected almost a century before. With the old masonry went the clock, which was replaced by a new timepiece. No- body bothered about the old ser- vant.
Then a later generation, interest- ed in old Preston, began to wonder if this association with the pat had this association with the past had gone on the scrap heap. No one knew.
Now, seventy-two-years after the clock vanished, it has been found- at Mr. Garlick's Beech Grove Farm, Greenhalgh, near Kirkham (Lancs), ticking away as efficiently as ever, and with its old dignity, above a barn door.
FARM HANDS REPAIR IT When it was dismantled it was bought by Mr. Garlick's grand- father, then Mayor of Preaton, who had it installed. at the farm.
It keeps perfect time on two windings a week. Its hourly strike can be heard a mile away, and it's the Time Dictator for the neigh hourhood. It the striking of Big Ben, heard over the wireless, does not coincide with the farm clock-- then Big Ben, they say, is wrong.
The clock was made more than a century ago. There is nothing com- plicated about its mechanism, and One of his younger daughters had if anything goes wrong which is » seldom-the farm hands can tackle she announced triumphantly, “is] repairs.
