THE DAILY SHORT STORY

THE FORGOTTEN "DATE"

Elise, Hayward found herself in a "I can promise you a dull evening," quandary. A week ago she had made he said, smiling. "I was planning to a date with someone to do something. go out alone to-night, and a brother But she couldn't remember with whom is rarely as interesting or exciting, as or what. It was all very annoying, an attentive, good-looking man."

Adrian,- she discovered, danced divinely. She wondered

why he'd never taken her places before. She was introudced to a lot of nice people, and was secretly proud of her brother when she compared him with other young men present. He was popular and much sought after.

Elise racked her. brains. First she sought to discover what kind of a date it might be, where they might be going to on this particular night. If she could establish this point, it would give her a clue. She would, she felt, be able quite easily to connect any par- ticular social function with a parti cular man.

The evening fairly, flew by. Elise practically forgot about her forgotten- First there was the sophomore hop date. But when they were again at at Tech. The most alarming part of the whole affair was that someone would be sure. to call before the evening was far ad- vanced, and if it happened to be some one with whom she didn't have the date, whatever could she say? It wouldn't do to go out with Jimmie Towne, if it were Bob Davis to whom she had promised herself for the even ing. Bob would be sure to hear of it and then there'd be a row. Elise hated rows.",

It was getting dangerously near the hour when someone would be sure to call, when Elise had a happy thought. She suddenly remembered that her brother, - Adrián, had spoken of a fraternity dance that very night. Even if he were taking a girl, Elise could go along, too. Adrian wouldn't care. And no one could blame her for going out with her own brother. Besides, it would be easy to explain to whoover it was who had asked her out that even- ing, that there had been a misunder standing. And the unknown couldn't very well feel hurt when he learned that she had been with Adrian, w

Elise found Adrian dressed and ready to depart,

But Adrian's eyes were twinkling. "It's all right, sis. You see, it was I with whom you had the date. A week ago I decided I'd been neglect- ing you and asked you to go to the frat dance with me. You promised and then forgot all about it. I didn't.
