German reports that the Soviet is insisting on a guarantee of the Far Eastern frontiers of the U.S.S.R., elicit a formal denial from Tass, the official Moscow news agency.

The agency also denies that this guarantee forms an obstacle to conclusion of an Anglo-Franco- Soviet agreement.

A more favourable view is now taken in well-informed quarters of the progress of the Anglo-Franco- Soviet negotiations, says Reuter's diplomatic correspondent.

The latest Soviet memorandum has been examined and the points of the two sides are believed to be nearing agreement.

It is felt that at the next meet-. ing between the British and French Ambassadors and Mr. Strang, and M. Molotov, failing unforeseen de- velopments, there are good chances of outstanding points of difference being cleared away in principle.

If agreement is reached there would follow the task of drafting the text.

This might involve a little time, but the outlook in well-informed quarters is optimistic.-Reuter.
