Amazing Progress Made By King Kong: Janber Shows Promise
(By "RAPIER”)
With the advent of summer weather, racing under the aus- pices of Hong Kong Jockey Club has been brought to a close as far as the first half of the sea-
is concerned and
for three months racing enthusiasts will be deprived of their favourite sport.
Apart from the Annual Meeting, six Extra Race Meetings have been held, three of which were marred by inclement weather, as the result of which racing generally did not produce the high standard which would probably have been the case had the track not suffered from the effects of rain. Nevertheless, the various events were keenly contest- ed, and there were some thrilling finishes.
With the large number of mounts at his disposal, it is not surprising that Mr. C. Encarnacao should head the list of successful jockeys.
His record so far reveals 26 wins. 16 seconds, 8 thirds and 25 unplaced outings.
At this rate, Mr. Encarnacao is con- fidently expected to retain his position at the end of this year, and by that time his winning mounts will probably
constitute a record.
Mr. V. V. Needa comes next with 17 firsts, 17 seconds, 12 thirds, and 44 times unplaced.
He has had several fine wins to his credit, but on more than one occa-
sion has disappointed badly by delaying his challenge until too late..
are
Messrs. Encarnacao and Needa from Shanghai, and since their so- journ here have both done remarkable well in local racing.
Mr. Pih takes the lead among local jockeys, with 10 firsts, 17 seconds and 7 thirds, followed by Mr. A. W. Ray- mond, and Messrs. B. L. Tao, D. Black, and B. A. Proulx.
New Griffins

Eve of Harvest has improved pidly since the annual race meeting, and its greatest achievement was un- doubtedly its win in the St. George's Plate (14 miles).
On a heavy track and carrying 166 lbs., Eve of Harvest, ridden by Mr. Black, was left at the starting gate, but by dint of hard riding Mr. Black gradually crept up on the leader, Blue Express, and won after a tremendous effort by a head.
The finish of this race will long be remembered.
Eve of Harvest then went on to win the Lead Mine Handicap (first section) over six forlongs; this time under the control of Mr. Hearne. It won $3,139 in stakes money.
Hectic View, belonging to Mr. Li Lan- sang, failed to make any impression at the Annual Meeting, but since then it has revealed its true form. At the Second Extra Meeting, Hectic View, carrying 168 lbs., won the Mirs Bay Stakes (six furlongs) and then carried off the Fatshan Handicap. (six was defeated by En furlongs). It

After winning the Hong Kong Derby and the Champion stakes, Rose, Flect its outstanding again demonstrated racing ability by winning the Hong Kong Handicap (1 Miles) when carrying 168 lbs.
Its next triumph-and in this I consider it scored its best win-came in the Easter Stakes. Conceding no less than 25 lbs, handicap to Bear Claw, this outstanding pony won the race by two lengths, and in so doing equalled the record for the mile which was set up by Diana Bay on April 17, 19881

into form when winning the Smugglers Plate (six furlongs) on the second day of the Fifth Extra meeting.
To Guinness Time fell the distinc- tion of paying out the best win divi- dend among the subscription griffins. Ridden by Mr. Hearne, it engaged in a rare tussle with Radium Star, in the Shatin Handicap (2nd section) and it was due to hard riding on the part of Mr. Hearne that it secured the ver- dict by a short head. Its win was responsible for $127.00 being paid out.
Handicap (two mile post distance), Mr. Encarnacao being the Jockey on both occasions.
Rising Star, ridden by Mr. Raymond, won the Rosehill Stakes (six fur- longs) and National Victory (Mr. Chanson) scored its only win in the Rid- Coolgardie Stakes (one mile). den by Mr. Needa, Sydney Lad won the Canterbury Park Handicap (two mile post distance) at the Fourth Extra Meeting, and Bruno, under the control of Mr. Churchill, won the Ho- bart Stakes (about half mile 170 yards).
Ruby Star was a pony of which great things were expected at the An- nual Meeting. It was not until the Fifth Extra Meeting, however, that it really asserted itself by winning the Warwick Farm Handicap (six fur- longs).
Lastly we have Janber, belonging to the Marber Stable. This pony was heralded as one of the best among this year's Australian ponies, but, unfor- tunately, it met with an accident whilst in training for the annual racing car- nival.
Its mishaps was sufficiently serious to prevent it from running until the Fifth Extra Meeting, when, ridden by Mr. Raymond, it was beaten by Ruby Star. On this occasion it was very heavily backed, but it made amends by winning the Sharks Bay Handicap.
Janber is undoubtedly a powerful and fast pony. How good it will be when running against ponies like Court- ing Eve, Lucky Lad and Lancashire Chips remains to be seen, but when they do clash a great battle may be confidently expected.
Old Griffins, China Ponies

Other subscription griffins that have done well are February Fourth, Phoe- nix, Strathbannock, Wilber, Green Bay, Milleaye, Gog, Kutcheung and more races during the Extra Meet- Some Hope, all of which won one or inga.
New Australian Subscription Griffins
After winning the Rooty-Hill Derby at the Annual Meeting, Triumphant Day, belonging to Dr. S. N. Chau, won the Broken Hill. Handicap at the Third Extra Meeting, carrying 185 lbs. The race was run on a sodden track, and its win was most convin- cing.
Since then it has been placed third within the Bondi Handicap.
Triumphant Day won $4,408 in stakes money.
Chiltern, belonging to Mrs. Eu Tong Sen, won $2,951.

The owner of Marksman has every reason to feel satisfied with his acquisition, for, since the com- mencement of the Annual Meeting. this pony has won no less than $6.150, second only to Rose Elect! Marksman undoubtedly proved it- self the best subscription griffin at the Annual Meeting, but since then it has won only one race, the Sub-Griffine Spring Handicap over 144 miles, car- rying 165. Moonlight View sprung a surprise, to pay out a substantial dividend.
Pinfarthings came into the picture by winning the second section of the Fatshan Handicap after an absence of several months, during which it mas- tered its fear of the gate.
Rose-Queen, now owned by Mr. Poy, had two very nice wins, and Potentate, belonging to Mr. Eu Tong-sen, carried off the second section of the Canton Handicap, while. Rose Jane, another pony from the same stable, won the Hong Kong Handicap (14 miles) at the First Extra Meeting, but has not done anything of note since, beyond filling second places.
