The Paris message quotes a Saigon despatch saying that the sub- marine had not been seen since she dived 30 hours ago.
Although there is no immediate -confirmation of the apparent disas- ter from French official circles in. París (says Reuter), there was rea- : son to believe that a new and cor- rect official statement would be is- sued from the Ministry of Marine later last evening.
It is believed that the submarine was cruising off the coast of Indo- China at the time of her disappear- ance, and first reports stated that she dived and failed to reappear.
THIRD DISASTER
If fears for the safety of the Phenix prove to be well-founded, it will have been the third disaster to a French underwater craft since the Great War.
In 1928, the French submarine Ondine, collided with a Greek steamer off Portugal, and 43 of the crew lost their lives.
In 1932, the new submarine Pro- methee, a sister-ship to the Phenix, sank while on trials off Cherbourg with the loss of 62 men.
