HIT FILMS COMING TO THE ORIENTAL
Film executives recently agreed that the most promising man in the cinema business to-day is John Garfield, the newly discovered Warner Bros. star, who smashed his way to the fore- front after only one appearance, in a supporting role, on the silver screen. John Garfield made his debut in "Four Daughters," the Warner Bros. picture that was so well accepted
when it was shown recently at the King's Theatre, and so satisfied were the directors of that picture that they saw to it Garfield was given the lead in his next vehicle, "Blackwell's Is- land," which is scheduled to open three-day programme at the Oriental Theatre to-morrow. This is a
first- run picture and with the usual sideration for its patrons, no charges are planned.

"Four
Those who saw Garfield in Daughters" were agreed that he was an actor above the ordinary. He play- ed his part so naturally and unassum- ingly that he walked away with the picture. The news, therefore, that he will be in the leading part in Black- well's Island" should not surprise local movie fans. On the other hand it should merely confirm the high opinion they have already formed of this sen- sational young actor who has had prac- tically no professional experience.
"Blackwell's Island" is a picture that should prove extremely popular with local audiences. It is a gangster pic- ture without much of the shooting ele- ment in it. It shows how a gang works a racket on the waterfront and how they continued to do so even
after they had all been sent to the prison known as "Blackwell's Island."

AGENCIES AND BRANCHES:
Garfield, as a pushing young_report- er, sets out to expose this racket but he has to go through more than news- paper-office routine to achieve his end. He has a very capable cast to sup- port him and advance reports are such that bookings should be extremely heavy especially as no fancy prices of admis- sion have been contemplated by the management of the Oriental Theatre who are showing a first-run picture at their ordinary popular prices.
Going one further the Oriental Thea- tre will put on "Little Miss Thorough- bred" for three days from June 18, also as a first-run picture with no extra charge. Miss Sheridan, long since a favourite with local cinema fans, and John Litel have the most important parts in this film dollars. but the one to look out for is little Miss Janet Chapman, the new four year old child-star, for whom executives predict The P. and O. steamer Bhutan, mburg a brilliant future. Janet Chapman is which left Shanghai yesterday, is the second Shirley Temple and it is a coincidence that she is not unlike the due in Hong Kong at about 6 a.m. popular Shirley in looks.
