Brilliant Pilot Dies From Germ Caught In China
was
Twelve years ago, when I learning to fly, the most brilliant pilot in the school was young H. H. Leech, son of Sir Joseph Leech, M.P., says J. D. S. Alan, air correspon- dent of "Sunday Dispatch."
He joined the R.A.F., and did very well. Most of his spare time was spent in racing, and so good was he that he was quite in demand as an aerial jockey.
STUNT FLYING
At upside-down, and all forms of stunt flying, he was superlative. Once I flew him round a race circuit so that he could memorise the turns, and he rebuked me for spinning.
TURKS' REBUFF FOR GERMANY
A further order by Turkey for British rolling stock to the value of £500,000 has been announced.
"I never spin," he said, "because the machine is out of control, and I don't like machines out of control
-even for a second,”

In 1931 he was, at the age of 22, the "baby" of the Schneider Trophy team. Unfortunately he was pulled out. to replace a test pilot who had. been killed in an accident.
the "I could not look Leech in face," said Squadron Leader Orle- bar, who had to break the news.
AT AIR MINISTRY,
Officer
Last year I met Flying Leech at Waterloo Station. He in troduced me to his beautiful young He wife, bride of a few months. said he had a desk at the Air Minis- try.
"You at a desk?” I was incre- dulous.
He told me that while serving in an aircraft-carrier in China waters he had been infected with some my- sterious germ. They did not know what it was. They knew only the results. He would never fly again in the Service, but he was planning to He At the same time a £2,250,000 | sneak in some private flying. contract, reported to have was very steady and cheerful about been secured by 8 German lit. group, has not yet been signed.

It is the first order coming under the £16,000,000 credit granted by Britain to Turkey in May, 1938.
The German contract referred to was for the construction at Gueld- juk, on the Sea of Marmora, of a modern naval base.
It was stated last month that this contract had been obtained in the face of keen competition by British and Dutch concerns,
Now, however, it is believed to be held up by recent political de- velopments and may be placed else- where. The Anglo-Turkish defen- sive agreement is undoubtedly one of the political factors at work.
