HE Sixth Extra Race Meeting, to be held at the Valley to- morrow, will be the last meeting under the auspices of the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the first part of the season. Racing will be resumed on September 23.

To-morrow another interesting programme of nine events will be decided, and it may be worth while to point out that the majority of them are sprint affairs and that a little care in noting the draw for positions may prove profitable.

RACE NO. 1: CARPENTARIA HANDICAP: HALF MILE. In this opening event, which will be contested by Australian ponies of this season that have not won more than $500 in stakes, it is a difficult matter to select the winner on account of the short distance. First of all we have Ajax to consider. It will on this occasion be taken care of by Mr. Ray- mond, and, remembering the way it ran third to Janber last Saturday, many will no doubt rely on it when making their bets. Personally, I think that Ajax should win, but Amber II (with Mr. Ip Kui Ying up) is also a dangerous contender, being fast- moving animal. Amber II ran third in the Rosehill Stakes at the Second Extra Meeting over six furlong, but it has not been seen in action since on account of leg trouble, from which

I understand it has now fully re- covered.

Loquacious was regarded as a good pony during training for the Annual Meeting, but it failed to come up to expectations; and it is, I believe, run- ning for the first time to-morrow, and how well it will fare is a most difficult to answer.

question

Then there is Poconos (Mr. Black) and although it has not done anything of note at recent outings, I think it will find the short distance more to its liking. Helium (Mr. Hearne) be- longing to Dr. Reidy is a most diffi- cult pony to handle, but if it will only take into its head to run to-morrow a surprise is in store from this com-

bination.

However. I am inclined to nominate Ajax to win, with Amber II taking second place, and Poconos third, leav- ing Helium as the outsider.

RACE NO. '2; "NANLING HANDICAP: ONE MILE:

This event is confined to subscrip- tion griffins of this season that have not won more than $1,000 in stakes. and from among the entries we need consider only the following:--

Ascot Vale (Mr. Encarnacao) Gog (Mr. Needa)

Green Bav. (Mr. S. L. Yuen)

Heddon (Mr. Black)

Wild Bear (Mr. Pih) Sports Venture (Mr. Tào). Possibly on account of the fine show which they put up at'a recent meet- ing, Green Bay and National Honour appear at the top of the weights, and for that reason I very much doubt whether they can be expected to win. Ascot Vale. sprang a

surprise last Saturday when It won the Smugglers Plate, and so for to-morrow its weight has gone up to 164 lbs. I believe that it can still win, but it will ninet storn opposition from Wild Bear, which ran second to Some Hope in the "Lama Handicap.

Heddon's form, has been hosting different, and it will probably win when not expected to do so. Mr. Nerda-has good-chance-to ferreagairy on Gog, pony which is constantly improving. I feel that the finish will,

be fought out between Ascot Vale and Wild Bear, with Green Bay filling third place.

RACE NO. $4 YANGTSE HANDICAP: SIX FURLONGS

This race is reserved for griffins of this season that have not won a race, Rose Emily (Mr. Encarnacao) taking with Peaceful View (Mr. Pih) and the posts of honour, each carrying 168 lbs. I think the issue will be be tween three ponies-

Galveston Bay (Mr. Black)

the best recommendation here, as it Peaceful View seems to me to have is quite fast and the distance should just about enable it to finish ahead of the other two. It is said that Rose Emily has been kept back for this will give Peaceful View a good run. race, and there is no doubt that it Galveston Bay is an improved animal. but I cannot see it taking anything ful View win, but not by too great a but third place. I expect to see Peace- margin.

RACE NO. 4: HWANG HO HANDICAP: HALF MILE.

This is another sprint affair in which subscription griffins of this season that have not won a race will figure. The two best ponies here for this distance are undoubtedly Welcome (Mr. Chao) and Radium Star (Mr. Tao).

Welcome' ran second to Ascot Vale

last Saturday, and it certainly has a good chance of scoring a win here. Radium Star was only just beaten by Guinness Time in the Shatin Han- dicap, and this time it will have Mr. Tao up and must, therefore be serious- ly considered as a potential winner."

Magog (Mr. Needa) came in third in the Lama Handicap, and a

good start here may enable the pony to upset calculations. Kut Cheong (Mr. Raymond) is another speedster which can be relied on to do well here.

However; I nominate Welcome win, with Radium Star second and Magog third.

(Mr.

past performances, Bredon Proulx) seems to be the logical choice, but can it still win carrying 165 lbs? Bredon won the Flemington Plate over the same distance at the Annual Meet- ing, but ran unplaced in the St. Kilda Handicap over six furlongs at the Third Extra Meeting. This pony is so fast, however, that even the extra weight should not hamper its chances of winning. The danger, of course, is Annabella, winner of the Manly Handicap over a mile last Saturday, and yet I cannot see it putting saying so being that it is not a short too great opposition, my reason for distance pony. wrong, but I do recollect' that in the However, I may be race which was recently won by Per- fect Day, Annabella failed to start well and ran unplaced.

Violet Queen, with Mr. Yuen up, be ignored,, and keep Discovery Bay and carrying only 135 lbs. is not to in mind, especially as it will be rid- den by Mr. Needa. I fancy Bredon to win, with Violet Queen second and Annabella third.

Humdrum Eve (Mr. Pih) Jober (Mr. Raymond) Lancashire Lass (Mr. Tao) · Oak Bay (Mr. Davis)

Potentate (Mr. Encarnacao).

The best candidate here is undoub- tedly Humdrum Eve, and I don't think - that even the top weight of 168 lbs. will stop it from winning. This pony has been knocking at the door for a win for some months. →

Potentate won the second section of the Canton Handicap at the 3rd Extra Meeting and whilst it ran very badly at the last meeting I feel that if Hum- drum Eve is to be beaten to-morrow Potentate will be the one to do Lancashire Lass may find the distance too long, and Jober should fill the third position.

over the mile, stands a chance of winning, but Night View (Mr. Pih), despite the heavy burden of 168 lbs., must also demand support. Roval Highness (Mr. Encarnacao) ran third in the Shatin Handicap over six fur: longs, and as it is very fit just now it can be relied on to give the others a good fight.

Irish Ladies' Title

London, May 24-Miss Clarrie Tier- nan, one of last year's British Curtis Cup team, was surprisingly beaten in Championship, at Bundoran, County the third round of the Irish Ladies'

Donegal, yesterday. Her conqueror was Mrs, Ian Stuart (Royal Portrush), wife of the Irish international Rugby foot- baller, who was 2 up at the twelfth, and halved every hole after that to win 2 and 1.

Mrs. Fletcher (Hermitage), another internationalist, was also beaten one hole in the third round by Miss C. Meares (Island). The feature of the fourth round was the recovery of Miss E. Pentony (Hermitage), a former title-holder, who won on the last green against Mrs. Lowry (County Louth). Miss Pentony was 8 down with 4 to play, but, mainly through brilliant driv ingabe won the four remaining holes for the matcha
