Adult Citizens'
Expected To Stay
Bans On Petrol And Road Travel
A full statement of policy on the evacuation of adults in war time is likely to be made by the Bri- tish Government in the immediate future.
This policy has been decided upon only after considerable Ministerial and Departmental con- troversy. It will probably provoke more discussion than any previous decision of the Government on civil defence.
Briefly. Ministers have had to decide how far in an emergency should the populations of London and other big cities apart from the 3,000,000 children' and special classes to be moved by the Govern- ment--be prevented from leav- ing, or to what extent should mili- tary force be employed to control | any movement of population.
It is understood that Ministers have decided after much discus- sion, against drastic measures, such as the use of the military. The sug- gestion had received a certain amount of support.
The Government's general atti-| tude will be that people should stay where they are as a duty. A strong appeal will be made to the public not to create panic and chaos by attempting to leave their homes in
BLONDES MAKE BAD CHESS PLAYERS
Do blondes make good chess players Mr. A. Rider, director of the recent Hastings Chess Congress, says they do not. In support of his assertion he pointed out that of the 130 players only one fair head is to be seen,
"Fairhaired people," he added, "do not seem to have the powers of concentration
necessary for the game. They become nervous and reckless under the strain of the competition atmosphere in which brunettes are at their ease."

FISHY STORY
A spanish cargo vessel which for over two years had been ber- thed in the East Dock, Cardiff, pro- ceeded to dry dock for repairs on being ordered to sail for Spain.
When the water was pumped out of the dry dock the water grid of the dock was seen to be alive with fish, principally mullet, which when collected filled several sacks and weighed several hundredweight.
THEY SWAM AFTER The theory is that the fish, which had been feeding for over two years on shellfish encrustations on the Mr. Rider's statement was quick-vessel's bottom, had followed the the first few days of an emergency.ly challenged, Mr. H. J. Braunholtz, vessel from the East Dock to the
keeper of ethonography at the dry dock. British Museum, described the theory as "absolute nonsense."
3,000,000 TO BE MOVED
In making their decision, Minis- ters have taken into account the fact that their elaborate plans for moving 3,000,000 children, mothers of babies and others, might be ser- iously jeopardised by an uncon- trolled
adult movement of the population.
The railways, it is understood, now want four days at least in which complete evacuation of these 3,000,000. During this time it is believed that no one else will be allowed to leave their areas on the railways, though skeleton services for general purposes are likely to be run.
+
To prevent people leaving by car, petrol supplies are to be cut off. Further certain roads will be reserved for use in the event of railway communications being damaged.
Government
Until recently the favoured a policy of advising the public who wished to move to leave well in advance of hostilities and before the child evacuation began. It is now felt that the Government cannot properly give any advice on when this movement should begin.
TOTAL EVACUATION
Finally, it is generally accepted that certain target areas in crowd- ed districts will have to be entirely evacuated, and place and trans- port will have to be found for the inhabitants. Neutral areas may be used for their accommodation.
There still remains a highly im- portmant question, to which the Goy- ernvent's answer is awaited with growing anxiety by many in Lon- don and elsewhere.
of
Hundreds of thousands parents, who do not want to send their children to unknown destina- tions under the Government's scheme, want to know how far they will be allowed to evacuate these children by their own arran- gements to friends and relatives.

E.R.A. TO CLOSE
End of £75,000 Racing Car Enterprise
English Racing Automoblies Ltd., of Bourne, Lincs, builders of the famous E.R.A. cars, will cease to exist by the end of the present month.
r
Mr. Humphrey Cook, the man who has spent £75,000 on this en- terprise, announced. "I have de- cided to close down and E.R.A. Ltd. will be defunct."
A national appeal for funds to help Mr. Cook run a team of new E.R.A. cars is being made; it has collected more than £1,000 of the £8,000 sought. The trustees of this fund, Col. J. Sealy Clarke, chairman of the R.A.C., Lt.-Col. J. T. C. Moore-Brabazon, M. P., Capt George Eyston, and Sir Algernon Guiness are to meet as soon as pos- sible to consider the position.
Four entirely new cars had been begun for the coming, season, and it was to maintain the prestige abroad that E.R.A.a had built up in the past years that a plan for a na- tional fund was drawn up.
