FIGHTING DYING DOWN ON ALL FRONTS
"Chungking, To-day.
Last week's fighting on all fronts has died down, ac- cording to the Chinese military spokesman at yesterday's press conference, apparently owing to lack of sufficient troops as well as a clear-cut | plan of battle by the Japanese.
While the situation in Kwangtung and Kwangsi is unaltered, some minor movements took place in the Han River sector.
The spokesman said only 1,000 Japanese were advancing on Chien-
kiang, and denied the importance of ITALIAN PRESS
the attack.
Contrary to recent reports of in- RESUMES ATTACKS
creased Japanese activity in central and western Shansi, where the Ja- panese are trying to reach the Yel- low River, the spokesman declared that only minor engagements are taking place.

ANTI-FOREIGN PROPAGANDA IN CANTON
Canton, To-day. Anti-foreign propaganda con- ducted by the Chinese press and in pamphlets, hitherto con- fined to the occupied areas of North China, has now spread to Canton.
The Chinese press here daily. contains anti-foreign material, particularly anti-British and anti-American.
A pamphlet addressed to the Chinese armies, issued by the "Kwangtung relief
troops," urges fellow citizens to "un- derstand that if the war
goes on, China's history of 5,000 years will be destroyed by those stern nations such as Britain, France, Russia and the United States.

day resumed its lapsed anti- French campaign, again making claims on Nice and Corsica. These demands were allowed to fall into the background when Signor Benito Mussolini, in a speech, de- clared his claims were limited to Tunisia. Djibouti and the Suez Canal.
The "Telegrafo," newspaper belonging to Count Ciano's family, devoted a four-column ar- ticle to "the last act in the Corsi- can drama."
"Corsica will eventually return to the bosom of the great Italian family," it concluded, "for it is an irrevocable historical right that cannot be wiped out by any persecutions!"-Havas.
ENORMOUS SOVIET ARMY
MOSCOW, MAY 25.
AT LEAST TWO MILLION MEN ARE UNDER ARMS IN SOVIET RUSSIA'S PEACETIME ARMY, FOREIGN OBSERVERS DECLARED TO-DAY IN RE- VIEWING THE U.S.S.R.'S MILI- TARY STRENGTH.
They pointed out that army divisions have been increased from 13,000 to 18,000 men, and that these are now 50,000 officers in active service, with 5,000 young officers graduating from military schools every year.
Reports about the Army's de- moralization following periodical purges, are discounted.
There have been no mutinies reported and there are no signs of bad feel- ing between civilians and soldiers, which are usually first indications of crumbling morale and effici- epcy.
Measures have been taken, strengthen the authority of tary chiefs, who are no longer submitted to the bullying of Com- munist Party committees. They now depend solely on orders from their superiors. -*- Havas.
