EIGHTY DEAD IN THETIS DISASTER

Stern Sinks At High Water: Hope Destroyed
London, To-day.
With an air supply in the sunken submarine Thetis estimated to last approximately to midnight last night, those in charge of the rescue opera- tions were working feverishly against time. There seems to be some doubt as to how many men have escaped from the submarine. The ori- ginal report that four had been saved has now been extended to six, though this is not con- firmed.
All Hope Now Abandoned
London, To-day,
An official of Cammell Laird announced late last night to crowds waiting at the gates of the shipyard in Birkenhead that hope has been given up for the men on board Thetis.

It is learned at the that the front part of Thetis is flooded and that the forward Davis escape hatch is out of action.
"Attempts have been made to cut Admiralty a hole in the stern of the sub- marine, but had to be abandoned until the tide slackens at about 6 p.m. The strong tide at. present has caused the submarine's stern to go under water."

RESCUE EFFORTS
As soon as the heads of the escapees bobbed above the surface, boats manned by bluejackets raced to the scene and tranferred the rescued men to a waiting destroy-
er.
Meanwhile wärships and rescue ships of all kinds continue to circle the submarine.
The fight to save the imprisoned men now seems to have become a fight against time, as with every passing minute the air supply in- side the submarine has diminished, though it is estimated there is suf- ficient to last till 1.40 a.m. on Saturday.
