Calgary Turned

Turned Into

Into City Of Carnival For The King

END OF FIRST LONG SECTION OF CANADIAN TOUR

Medicine Hat, To-day.

Travelling all night through the Canadian prairie lands, Their Majesties arrived here en route to Calgary at 6.10 last evening (British Standard Time) and were given a great welcome by ran- chers and farmers who had come in from the surrounding country to greet them. Two thousand Indians encamped in wigwams with their squaws were among the most enthusias- tic of 200,000 people who welcomed the King and Queen at Calgary at 10 o'clock last night to the "wild and woolly. west."

The visit marks the end of the first long section of the Royal trans- Canadian tour, and to-day Their Majesties spend their first day of Banff National complete rest at Park in the Rocky Mountains.

CARNIVAL CITY

The train left Medicine Hat for Calgary, the last of the "frontier cities," near the foot of the Rockies,

at 5.31 p.m.

Throughout Thursday night cow- boys and cowgirls paraded the bril- liantly illuminated streets, turning Calgary into a carnival city.

A shop selling the "ten gallon" hats beloved of cowboys had a whole window devoted to tartan ties in honour of the Queen. The ties sold rapidly.

"STRAIGHT SHOOTER''

Advance opinion of Their Majes- ties appeared to be fairly repre- sented by the remark of a tram conductor to a local repórter: "I have only seen the King in pic- tures. I think he is just one grand straight shooter.”

The chef of the Banff Hotel where Their Majesties proceeded last night, has prepared a wide the range of local delicacies for Royal menu, including buffalo meat and Rocky Mountain trout:-Reuter.
