COLDSTREAM GUARDS IN

BATTLE OF BROADWAY

Sixty men of the Coldstream Guards—a regi- ment whose glorious deeds fill pages of British military history-fled in disorder on New York's Broadway recently.

They fought a gallant but hopless battle against an army of adoring women of all ages.

They rushed to their rooms high They were besieged later behind

the hotel and barricaded barricades high up in the Hotel up in Taft. They are the band of Cold-themselves in. stream Guards, which landed from the Aquitania,

In full dress uniform the men marched from the quayside through crowded streets.

They swung along. Martial music rang in the canyons between the skyscrapers.

They progressed through the city followed by a mob of admiring girls which grew larger every

minute.

Girls, ogling the marching Guard- smen, so handsome in their scarlet tunies and bearskins, shouted such warcries. as:

"Oh! Aren't they just too cute!” "Buy me that, momma!"

""Too, too devine!"

"I guess they're genuine Bengal Lancers!"

Playing "The Stars and Stripes Forever," the brave Guardsmen marched on to Broadway's Hotel Taft,

Perhaps that call to America's patriotism is to blame for the Bat- tle of Broadway, 1989.

The adoring girls converged on

the Guardsmen and charged.

Step by step the gallant soldiers retreated.

Then, completely overwhelmed, they fled in disorder up countless steps.
