HILL-TOP PLANTING FOR BETTER FRUIT

MEN are planting strawberry roots on a Somer- set hilltop a thousand feet above sea level, al- though they know the plants will never bear fruit at the bleak altitude.

Recent years have brought a falling off in the quality and quantity of strawberries, and experts discovered that virus diseases had affected the plants.

New hope came to the industry when Mr. J. Jarrett, a Ministry of Health inspector, who lives at Wes- ton-super-Mare, undertook to spon- sor a scheme if the growers would finance it. Mr. Jarrett, explaining his scheme, cleared up the mystery of the hilltop toilers.

"We are using a special stock of plants, which have been reared by the Kent research station," he said. "They are being planted on the Medip Plateau at an altitude of 1,000ft., and the flowers will be re- moved as they form.

"We shall not attempt to produce fruit on Mendip, But the keen air of the hill will develop plants of exceptional vigour, and when they are removed and planted in warm valleys we expect to get larger, fruit than has ever been seen

the market, and in greater quantity.”

When a sacred bull ran into a china shop at Calcutta and smash- ed all the valuable china, the pro- prietor stood by helpless, fearful of offending the animal. He allowed the damage to proceed until the bull got bored and wandered from the shop.

There are some hundreds of “sa- cred" bulls in Calcutta which wan- der about unmolested. They even used to lie on the tramlines until

them English police confined back streets.
