6-HOUR TEST OF THAMES A.R.P.: AMBULANCE SERVICE OF 60 BOATS
London's river ambulance ser- vice, which is being organised for emergency by the Port of London Authority along 48 miles of the Thames from Barnes Bridge to Canvey Island, staged a realistic rehearsal of its wartime duties re- cently.
V. A. D.s in uniform and steel helmets, Sea Scouts representing casualties, and many private yachts- men co-operated with a converted pleasure steamer and 60 small river craft in a six-hour A. R. P. test. Mr. A. P. Herbert, M.P., was at the wheel of one of the patrol boats.
In war-time the Port of London Authority plans to run 13 pleasure steamers converted into hospital ships, which could carry 120 casualties.
Each ship would be manned by a doctor, three trained nurses, eight V.A.D.s, and two Sea Scouts, and would patrol one of the 13 sections into which the river has been divid- el. Two units of this size would run a 24-hour service. More than 700 private yachtsmen, running speed-boats as tenders, have volun- teered their services.
LABELLED CASUALTIES The chief object of the service would be to collect casualties which might occur among the 60.000 dock workers and 15,000 river workers, or in congested areas bordering the river.

river craft are used for conveying casualties from the shore to the ship's side..
The rehearsal was considered extremely satisfactory, despite the difficulty of carrying stretchers from the shore through the narrow doorways of the pleasure steamer.
In addition to the hospital ships the P.L.A.'s big emergency scheme includes a ferry-boat service operat- in ing from the Isle of Dogs. Silver- safe areas, where ambulancestown, North Woolwich, and Wap- would be waiting to carry them di-ping, which might be cut off from rect to base hospitals.

From the river. L.N.E.R. pier at Woolwich we col- lected half a dozen casualties, car- ried aboard on stretchers and there dealt with by nurses and V.A.D.8 as their labels directed.
Each casualty had his name, ad- dress and injury written on a label by the first-aid service achore, so that proper
treatment and direc- tions could be given on board.
The first casualties were carried as far as Dagenham and landed at Ford's jetty. More were collected on the return from a wharf at Mill- wall, treated and landed at Cadogan Pier, Chelsea.

Military experts consider however that Italian action against.
