DIRECTIONS FOR THE IM- MEDIATE- GROUPING WHOLESALE FIRMS SUPPLY- ING PROVISIONS AND GRO- CERIES, TO SAFEGUARD THE MAINTENANCE OF FOOD SUP- PLIES IN EVENT OF WAR HAVE BEEN ISSUED. BY THE FOOD (DEFENCE → PLANS) DE- PARTMENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE.

The scheme, whereby firms whose premises lie within 16 specified vul- nerable areas should at once form themselves into groups of between five and eight, is to be completed and sent to the department, Secre- taries are to be appointed to each group.

The firms, it is pointed out, ave those on which the public relies for important foods, including flour, bacon, sugar, tea, butter and mar- garine. It is proposed, to safeguard against the possibility that the main office of a wholesale firm, or its ware- house or transport facilities, might be damaged or destroyed.

If one or more firms should be put out of action, remaining mem-. bers of the group would temporarily take over the business and continue to supply the retailers:

Customers and retailers would be returned as soon as the firm was able to resume trading. Liabiliti- es and debts arising during its "in- capacity would be for the account of the group.

The scheme is suitable for the whole United Kingdom, but will apply first to the following centres of population: London (Metropoli- tan Police Area); Chatham, Gilling- ham and Rochester; Bristol. Cardiff and Barry; Liverpool, Bootle, Bir- kenhead, Wallasey and Crosby; Manchester, Salford and Stretford; Birmingham and Smethwick; Leeds; Bradford Sheffield; Hull; Newcas- tle and Gateshead; Portsmouth and Gosport; Southampton; Glasgow; Edinburgh and Leith;, Dundee.

NEW BRITISH AMBASSADOR'S CREDENTIALS

The question of recognition of the new status of Albania was raised in the House of Commons yesterday. The Prime Minister said that the credentials of the new British Ambassador to Italy, Sir Percy Loraine, were signed by. King George on March 28, and were addressed to, His Majesty the King, of Italy and Emperor of Ethiopia.

Mr. Chamberlain added that the Italian authorities had express- ed their willingness to accept those credentials.
