SHIPS FOR NAVY

Revelation Of Huge Programme

London, To-day.

The keels of 20 new 900-ton escort vessels of an en- tirely new type are to be laid sometime in June, reports Hector Bywater, naval correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph."

As large as pre-War destroyers, the vessels will be the fastest, best-armed and most efficient of their class in any navy.

All due to join the Fleet a year hence, they will be equally dangerous to hostile aircraft and sub- marines.

OFFICIAL HINT ON BRITISH REGISTRATION

As evidence of further speeding up of the naval construction pro- Mr. Bywater also states gramme, that eight of the 16. destroyers authorised this year have been or dered.

While the Navy's primary need is for escort vessels and destroyers, steady progress is being made with heavier construction.

Warships built, building and pro- jected entail a tonnage exceeding 950.000.

PARIS" FIRE SEQUEL

FOREIGNERS IN BLAZING MOTOR BOAT

Two foreigners, Captain W. E. Kirby, Secretary of the China Coast Officers Guild, and Mr. H. da Luz, Secretary of the Hong Kong, Can- ton and Macao S.B. Company, had an exciting experience when the motorboat in which they were pas- sengers caught fire in the harbour this morning.

Captain Kirby and Mr. da Luz had hired the motorboat, the "Lee Hang," at Queen's Pier, and were proceeding to the s.s. "Sui Tal” when the engine broke down about 100. yards off shore.

HAIFA JEWS COMPLAIN

Haifa, To-day.

For the protection of merchant ships, over 2,000 guns have been stored at various ports ready to be mounted in an emergency.

A thousand merchant ships will shortly be equipped to carry these guns through deck stiffening.

NAVY'S STRENGTH

Mr. Bywater concludes: "The Navy is absolutely and relatively stronger than it has been since the Napoleonic Wars, barring a period In 1918 when it overshadowed the combined armadas of the world."- Roûter.
