D.B.S. TENNIS VICTORY

K.C.C. Pair Fail To

Avail Themselves Of Fine Opportunities

(By “ADREM”)

A. V. GOSANO and J. J. Remedios, who were res- ponsible for one of the biggest upsets in the Open Tennis Championships this year when they beat E. C. Fincher and W. C. Hung, advanced yet another stage yesterday in beating the K. C. C. combination of G. C. Burnett and S. A. Gray by 9-7, 6-4.

This fact notwithstanding, it was most difficult yesterday, to recognise them as the pair which last appeared on No. 8 Court--the scene of their big triumph.

Remedios Disappoints

Un that occasion they reached great heights at times and their steadiness at vital per- iods carried them through.

In strict contrast, yesterday they were definitely off colour, both in- dividually and as a combination. For their victory they had to thank the general inconsistency of Gray, who, I believe was suffering from an injured foot.

Remedios, one of the finest players Hung, was nothing like the same man. in the match against F'mcher

His service did not start to function until late in the second set and his fore- hand drive, usually a powerful offensive weapon, simply refused to come off.

Gray, at the net, was on occasions, unbeatable. He returned some shots At one period of the game the K.C.C which were apparently unreturnable, pair were well on top and playing well and returned them for winners with enough to suggest that they might gel terrific angles. Over-anxious, they threw away vital points and lost the game.

Opportunity Passed!

Again when leading 5-4, they had a set point but failed again. Their great- est opportunity, however, came in the 14th game of the set. Leading 7-6, 40-15 they again let opportunity pass them by and as it happened it never came their way again!

Steadiest players on the court yes- terday were Burnett and Gosano. The former was obviously put off on several D.B.S. beat Hong Kong English Fo-occasions. by the impetuosity of his rum at tennis by 7 matches to 2 on Sa- partner but throughout both sets re- turday at the D.B.S.

It was in his positional play, how- ever, that he was -most at fault. Through over-engerness he very often went back for loba which, difficult for him, would have been sitters for Burnett and on other occasions left gaping holes in the combination through going for the wrong balls.
