ARE WE WORTH FIGHTING FOR?
The Labour party executive appears to have made up its mind that Sir Stafford Cripps's Popular Front" campaign is a nettle to be grasped firmly. In fresh action this week-end the executive followed up announce- "ment of its determination to ex- clude from the party any organi- sation or individual which joins Sir...Stafford's movement by ex- pelling famous leaders like Mr. Aneurin Bevan and Sir Charles Trevelyan. The party provides, says a memorandum, machinery which enables all classes of mem- bers to share in the control of its activities, but no affiliated or- ganisation or member cun permitted to use this machinery in association with outside forces to destroy the party's integrity or to endanger its independence. There is no hint of parley or com- promise. The effect of the policy of the firm grasp is yet to be seen. The nettle is rather a big one, and the effort of the exccu- tive may weaken the party rath- er than uproot the nettle. The threat of excommunication will doubtless deter a number of peo- ple. Its effect upon some of the prominent supporters of the Popular Front movement seems, however, only to have strength- ened their attachment to it.
