THE CHINA MAIL FRIDAY SUPPLEMENT, MÁRCH 81, 1989
OVERHEARD
(Continued from Page 1)
The dark young man ventured to take a peep at the doctor, and round the corner of his mouth there played a tiny smile.
"He'll be de
down
any moment now and you can have a word with him." As he was speaking the door opened and the dark young man again looked at it an- xiously, but it was no one for him. It was Mr. Francis.
"She's doing very well," he said to the old lady as he took her hand in his.
"I can't thank you enough," she said.
"Don't thank me. Your daugh- ter's constitution was really ex- cellent, but bringing her in a couple of days before was a good idea of mine. It let her settle down, you know, and acquire con- fidence. I was very pleased with her before the operation. She wasn't in the least worried."
The door opened again and a tall lady in a sister's costume backoned to the dark young man, who rose with alacrity, to leave the other four talking over the intricacies of a woman's inside.
Outside in the passage the mat- ron, for it was she, though he had not realised it, took him by the
arm.
"You needn't worry,'
"she said. "As I telephoned you earlier on, she's really splendid. Now you can see her for a couple of minutes while the surgeon is talking to her mother.'
The dark young man thanked her with his eyes and, coming to the bedroom door, pushed it gen- tly open and shut it as gently be hind him.

The girl in the bed looked to- wards him dully for a second, and then, her face lighting up in a smile she held out a hand weakly towards him.
"David," she said, "how won- derful. I was afraid the matron wouldn't be able to work it." The dark young man came over to the
bed and, taking her hand in his, kissed her gently on the forehead.
"I'm only allowed a minute," he said, "but you're all right." She smiled at him a little wanly,
"Of course I'm all right. Thanks to you, I never worried a bit."
"Does it hurt?”
"Not much. The last year has been wonderful—”
"And the next's going to be more so."
"I'll be all right in two months. I've told the matron you're to be allowed in whenever you come. When can you come to-morrow?”
"I'd better
come about the
same time. And now good-night, my dearest."
"Good-night, darling, I don't know what I. should do without you."
He kissed her again upon the forehead, held her hot hand a mo- ment and stole from the room just as the nurse was preparng to re- enter it. The matron was waiting for him at the head of the stairs, and she smiled at him.
·
"She looks marvellous, doesn't she?"
"She always has. I'll be here to-morrow at the same time, if that's all right." He smiled back at her.

"Oh, we'll be able to something. I can't have my pati- ent having a relapse because she can't see you." The dark young
man went down the stairs and back into the waiting-room; where he had left his hat.

The group had left the fire and was congregated about the door impeding the dark young man's
progress. He smiled again, a little defiantly, as a snatch of conversa- tion caught his ear.
"Well, Mr. Francis," the old lady was saying, "we can all take a share of the credit for Jacqueline's marvellous power of resistance.'
The dark young man 'dived into the middle of the group.
"Excuse me," he said, "I left my hat here." Cramming it on his. head, he was gone.
