JAPANESE PLANES IN RUTHLESS MASSACRE OF REFUGEES FROM KONGMOON

Macao, To-day.

ANOTHER important port in South China and one of the remaining sources through which communication between Hong Kong and the in- terior continued after the occupation of Canton, fell into the hands of the Japanese yesterday afternoon, when some 2,000 Japanese troops entered Kongmoon.

PITCHED BATTLE CONTINUES NEAR NANCHANG

Siushui, To-day.

A pitched battle continues on the immediate outskirts of Nan- chang, with casualties on both sides mounting hourly, according to field dispatches.

The Japanese:column which cross- ed the Kan River at Mishengkai, south of Nanchang, with the object of cutting the Chinese rear, is re- ported to have been halted.

There is also extremely heavy fighting at Niuhang, opposite Nan- chang, and Sungfow, 20 miles west of Nanchang.

Chinese are making steady pro- gress in the counter-offensive against the Japanese, at Tsingan, on the Wuning-Nanchang highway.

Fighting is also going on to the northeast of Wuning. Central News.

TROOPS ENTRENCHED

Shanghai, To-day.

The Chinese troops at Nan- ̈ 'chang⋅ have entrenched them-

selves.

Sharp fighting is occurring around Wuning, Our Own Correspondent.

The Japanese came from Kau kong and advanced without difficulty, being covered by squadrons of Ja- panese planes.

The railway station was totally demolished by bombs dropped yes- terday morning. Bombs rained mercilessly on the city throughout the morning, the Japanese object apparently being to eradicate the town from the map of China.

RUTHLESS SLAUGHTER

Messages from Sunwui state that wholesale slaughter of refugees oc- curred when Japanese planes flying low, emptied, their bomb racks the fleeing masses and then machine- gunned them.

The streets of Kongmoon are strewn with hundreds of dead and wounded, including troops who were helping the refugees to escape from the doomed city.

Roads leading out of Kongmoon are also strewn with men, and children, who met untimely deaths from Japanese bombs and bullets. The refugees were trek- king to Sunwui, about eight miles south-west of Kongmoon.

BOMBING OF ROADS

Macao, To-day. - Japanese planes are bombing all roads leading from Sunwui and attempted, unsuccessfully, to destroy a bridge about £ mile from Sunwui.

Brief messages this morning state that Sunwui was bombed.

Rivercraft from Kongmoon are pouring into Macao. Our Own Correspondent.
