Learning From Observation

By BEST BALL

Francis Ouimet made United States really golf conscious for the first time when he won

the 1913 National Open title, beating two such world famous golfers as Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in the play off. Ever since he was a youngster living next door to the famous Brookline course, Quimet had practiced golf. First it was with home made instruments on a home made course, fashioned from the material at hand. Later

he borrowed an occasional club of his brother's, yet whatever im- plement he was using he con- tinued to apply himself whole heartedly to the game. He con- stantly observed the good golfers of his day and it was this same capacity to improve that led him to a unique obsérvation in one of his trips abroad.

Playing with one of the British stars of the day, he noticed the latter was playing short approach shots with uncanny accuracy, us- ing an abbreviated swing in doing

Quimet himself was inclined tò overswing until he noticed the English player was keeping his left thumb straight down the top of the shaft. Francis followed
