Uncocking The Wrists

By BEST BALL Allowing the wrists to uncock too soon in the downstroke Jeopar- dizes the chances of gaining great- est clubhead momentum at impact. As it is the clubhead speed, when the ball is contacted, which imparts yardage, this is an important item. It is difficult enough to conserve the velocity until the proper mo- ment, oven when the wrists uncock at the proper time.

Numerous tests of high ranking golfers have proven that many reach the greatest speed slightly before the ball is struck. If such golfers have difficulty along this line, consider how handicapped the duffer is likely to be who, in his eagerness to klock the cover off the ball, maken, the flagrant error of hitting too early.

Generally speaking, the down- stroke is about half completed be fore the right hand enters, the picture and the wrists start to un- leash their stored up energy. It is this final punch that adds the yardage. For example, Willie Mag- Farlane, in the above illustration. is putting no great strain on his body during the downstroke, His body is well balanced with the weight, even at this point, shifting a trifle more to the left side at each stage. Yet the perfect timing he gets into the stroke by uncooking

the wrist at the right moment al- lows him enough yardage to keep up with the majority of his fellow pros.

Try to get more wrist action in the stroke the next time you play --and see if the results aren't worth

the effort.
