BRITISH GUARANTEE OF CZECH FRONTIER: NO UNPROVOKED AGGRESSION
YET, SAYS MR. CHAMBERLAIN
London, To-day. Answering a private notice question by the Labour Opposition leader, Mr. C. R. Attlee, in the House of Commons yesterday, the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, made a statement on Czecho-Slovakia. Mr. Chamberlain outlined events to yesterday morning, and added he had not yet received official confirmation of the most recent press reports regarding resignation of the Czech Government and the independence of Slovakia. Mr. Attlee, asked what action the British Govern- ment would take in view of the guarantee en- tered into regarding the territorial integrity of Czecho-Slovakia.
Did the Government, he asked, intend to consult with the other guarantors (France, Italy and Germany) and with Prague in the light of the present situation?
Mr. Chamberlain said the ques tion of any action had not yet arisen.
Sir Archibald Sinclair (Liberal) asked whether the Government still regarded itself under a moral obligation with regard to the guarantee.
Mr. Chamberlain replied that the position in that respect had not undergone any change,
