Set the momentous task of scoring 696 runs for victory, Eng- land made a grand start to their second innings against South Africa here yesterday, and at close of play had lost only one wicket for 253 runs, Edrich, the young Middlesex professional, scoring his first century in Test cricket.

Edrich found his true form, which had deserted him for most of the tour, in the match against Natal on February 27 when he scored a magnificent 150, driving with great power and making many brilliant hits to leg.
