M.G.M. STARS MOST POPULAR IN 1938

With Clark Gable heading the male stars for the third consecutive year, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer carried off highest honours in the annual poll of the Motion Picture Herald, American ́trado publication, to deter mine the loading: box office stars of 1938.

The ten ranking stars included five who are under long-term con- tract to M-G-M, Gable being followed by Mickey Rooney, Spencer Tracy, Robert Taylor and Myrna Loy.

The Horald also listed fifteen "honour stars", as well as several groups reflecting the influences of sectional preferences. M-G-M repre sentatives among the honour stars were Wallace Beery, Jeannette Mac Donald, Nelson Eddy, William Powell, and Misa MacDonald and Mr. Eddy bracketed as a teaut.

Prominent in the other groups, were such M-G-M stars and feature players as Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Luise Rainer, James Stewart, Greta Garbo, Hedy Lamarr, Eleanor Powell, Robert Montgomery Mar garet Sullavan, Lionel Barrymore, Low Ayres, Freddie Bartholomew, Melvyn Douglas, Judy Garland, Lewis Stone, Franchot Tone, Robert Young, George Murphy, Maureen O'Sullivan and Florence Rice.
