(By "RAPIER”)

THE 1939 Annual Race Meeting will be continued to-morrow, the last day, which is generally regarded as an off-day. There will be nine events on the programme, the most important of which-are the Professional Cup and Subscription Griffins Champions, and the Australian pony Champions, entries for which will not be · ·known until prior to the commencement of the respective events.

The weather so far has been exceptionally favourable, while to-morrow's attendance will be augmented by a large number of children.

The Nil Desperandum Stakes and Happy Valley Spring Handi- cap, confined to China ponies, subscription griffins, and griffins of this season that have started at least twice and not won, are divided into two sections.

At the time of writing, entries

for these events were not known so I will content myself with giving

RACE NO. 5: PROFESSIONAL CUP, AND SUBSCRIPTION Griffins CHAMPIONS:

RACES - NOS. 1 AND 3:0 These events are confined China ponies, subscription griffins of this season that have started at least twice at this meeting and have not won. Judging by per formances during the previous four] days of racing, I should say that the following will be prominent:-

PHOENIX (F. F. LI) BRESSAY (H. J. A. HEARNE) GUINNESS TIME (J. POTE-

HANDICAP: ONE MILE.

The following griffins of this sea- son will contest the consolation prize of $1,000.00:

AVON (H. J. A. HEARNE) BLUE DIAMOND (T. Y. WOO). FORGOTTEN STAR (9. W. PAN) GALVESTON BAY (P. Y. T. WEİ) HECTIC VIEW (T. L. WONG) LILLIBER (D. BLACK) PEACEFUL‍VIEW (H, C. PIH) TAXING MASTER (B. L. TAO).

On the third day, in the Racing Stakes, over the game distance, Blue Diamond very nearly created a surprise. It was only beaten by Galaxy after a struggle which last- ed until about 50 yards from the end. Although I cannot see this pony winning to-morrow, I think it will be in at the finish.

The obvious choice, however, is Lilliber, which, r second to Eve of Harvest in the Griffina Consola- tion Stakes. Avon seems to be a pony good for a short sprint, while Peaceful View appears capable of improving with more racing ex- perience. Forgotten Star and. Gal- veston Bay have been placed in previous races, but I am not ex- pecting either of them to upset Lil- liber.

Lucky Lad in certainly far différent pony – from what it was, when it first started racing last year has improved beyond expectations and in view of its past performances, I think it will win. to-morrow, with Lancashire Chips sacond.

· As a result of ita hany wine in the Rooty Hill Derby, Triumphant Day will no doubt receive strong, support, but I don't think it will be fast enough against these two old ponion. In fact, I will not be at all surprised to see Happy Landinga secure the better of Triumphant Day, especially after its convincing win on Wednesday. My nomina tions are: Lucky Lad to win, Len- cashire Chips Becond, and Happy Landings third.
