First news of the Spanish Republican Council of Ministers which opened on Tuesday night ar- rived last evening in form of the following non- committal communique from Alicante: "The Council of Ministers, convened during the evening hours. It informed the Government concerning the present situation and dealt with various current affairs. The next Council of Ministers will be held in Madrid.
MARSHAL PETAIN TO BE AMBASSADOR?

The nomination of Marshal Petain as first Ambassador to Spain is regarded as likely in diplomatic and political quarters.
The appointment of the veteran Marshal to the Ambassadorial post would be regarded in Burgos as a sign that France attaches special significance to the maintenance of friendly relations with the New Spain.
Marshal Petain had a conference with M. Daladier on Tuesday, after which M. Daladior declared to the press that he would appoint a personage to the Burgos post who was certain to find the ap- proval of the Cabinet as well as of
Trans-Ocean. the public.
EGYPT'S RECOGNITION

The Shanghai Municipal Police were kept on their feet throughout last night when four bombing in- cidents occurred in the city.
The first was at about 9.80 p.m. when hand-grenades and leaflets were thrown in Nanking Road near Sincere'a. No one was, however, injured.
The leaflets were signed by the Chinese Blood and Iron Group and threatened pleasure-seeking Chin- ese with death.
