precisely 11.00 a.m., the ringing of the first saddling bell will mark the commencement of the 1939 Annual Race Meeting under the auspices of Hong Kong Jockey Club. The stage is all set to start the ball rolling in connection with what has always been regarded as the outstanding sporting event of the year.

All roads will lead to the Valley, and visitors during the five days of racing will be assured of every- thing being done for their com- fort.

Provided the weather re- mains fine, and there is no reason to expect otherwise according to present indications, I shall not be in the least surprised to see a re- cord attendance of racing enthusi- asts, with the inevitable result that and cash parimutuel dividends sweeps will probably maintain a high standard.

indicated by the numbers in red. The ponies that I name as likely winners represent my carefully considered opinions after months at morning training, and it is my fervent hope that the views I express will prove of benefit to my readers.

RACE NO. 1. THE FOOCHOW CUP: 11⁄2 MILES: This long distance event

will

be

contested by China ponies of previous years. It was won by King's War- den last year, which was only opposed by Wild Life. To-morrow, in view of the presence of Silkylight, I am afraid that starters will be limited to the followingCameronian (Mr. En carnacao), Jober (Mr. Black), Moon- light View (Mr. Wong), Red Feather (Mr. Wel), Silkylight (Mr. Moller) and Wild Life (Mr. Hearne). Bear Claw and King's Warden will probably be running in the China Stakes.

MR. R. B.. MOLLER JR., NOT FOR ANNUAL MEETING7.

R. B. Moller Jr., who rides for the Cire stable, is unlikely to ride in the Annual Race Meeting owing. to having sustained an injury, Supporters of Navylight, one of the favourites for the Hong Kong Derby and Mr. Moller's mount, will be keenly disappointed.

so I am going to nominate Red Fea- ther second and Wild Life third. RACE NO. 2: MAIDEN STAKES:

This race will serve to introduce the new griffins to the racing public, and I expect to see the following com- Diamond (Mr. Woo), Conquering Time (Mr. Pote-Hunt), Jennifer (Mr. Ralph), Peaceful View (Mr. Wong), and Rose Elect (Mr. Encarnacao), Eve of Heaven (Mr. Marshall). The winner will probably be Rose Elect, Peaceful View or Conquering Time, and I think the race will result in the order named. From the first time I set oyes on Rose Elect, I have always been impressed by its fine appearance, and I am strongly of the opinion that over any distance up to a mile there is probably no other pony that

can beat it.

Rose Elect has proved its ability, as evidence of which I need only re- fer to the grand gallop which it serv ed up recently when it completed the Peaceful View is an- mile in 1.56.1. other fine looking pony, and it can cer- tainly move along at a great pace. This pony should be watched in all short distance events at future meet- ings Conquering Time is another speedy animal, but I cannot see it doing better than filling third place in this race.

tions.

The grass truck, which has been carefully nursed, is now in splendid condition, and this should assist ma- terially in keen racing and fast times being recorded.

In the Jockey Department, Owners feel generally have good reason to satisfied. Mr. Eu Tong Sen has en- tered a long and formidable string of ponies, and they will be under the control of Mr. C. Encarnacao, with W. G. the able assistance of Mr. Poy. I understand that they have also secured the assistance. of Mr. Judah from Shanghai.

`MR, WONG BACK AGAIN - After an absence of two years, Mr. T.-L. Wong is here again, and toge ther with Mr. H. C. Pih, the long string of ponies belonging to Mr. L Lan Sang will be in good hands.

Mr. V. V. Needa, always a favourite with local racing fans, will take care of the Dynasty and John Peel Stables The Eve Stablo will be in charge of Mr. F. Marshall, who has been racing here for a number of year, but a notable absentee is Mr. H. Mait- land, who rode with great success for the Dunbar Stable last year. This Stable, which includes ponies belong- ing to Lady Northcote and Sir V. M. Grayburn, will be ridden by Messrs. PAY. T. Wel and H. J. A. Hearne, Mr. R. B. Moller will take care of his father's ponies, and the Marber Stable will be handled by Mr. Donald Black.

As was the case last year, the Li Po Chun Stable is distinctly for tunate in securing the services of Mr. J. Foto-Hunt, whose "roputation ad a hard rider is widely known, Thon there are Messrs. B. A. Proulx, A.; W. Raymond, H. P. Chandon, 8. C. Liang, S.. W. Pan, P. P. Botelho, W. H, S, Davis, who is making a comeback after a bad peeldont, B, L, Tao, L. B. Chno and two new Chinese Jockeys from Hankow, namely Mosura T, Y. Woo and P. L Chui.

In analysing the prospects for to- morrow's events I would like to stress. the fact that out of the 12 racon to be decided, no less than eight of them, are sprint events. It is, thereford; a matter of the utmost importance to Lake note of the draw for position, as

Judging from training times, like Cocklerol the best. It recently went over the six furlongs distance in 1.82 with a last quarter of 27.2 and this time could be improved on if it were fully extended. Chiltern did the mile in 1.59 with a last quar- ter 28 1/5. This pony la undoubtedly. quite powerful, and if it does not win the Sydney Maiden Stakes, I would bearing. It in mind for

was credited to have done the 3/4 mile in 1.24, which was not officially timed. However, as Mr. Needa has more experience in handling Australian ponies, I fancy Cockleroi, to win with Chiltern second and Ruby Star third. RACE NO. 4: THE CHINA STAKES: FROM THE 11⁄2" MILE POST. In this short distance event, following will probably face the star- Bear Claw(Mr. Wei), Desert Gladiator ter: Chief (Mr. Encarnacao), (Mr. Marshall), Humdrum Eve (Mr. Wong), King's Warden (Mr. Needa), Oak Bay (Mr. Raymond) and Soldier of Britain (Mr. Pih). This race was won by Bar Claw last year, but if Desert Chief goes out in this event, I am afraid Mrs, Dunbar's candidate Desert will not be able to repeat its previous success. As is well-known, Chief has built up a reputation for doubtedly is I don't think it will be speed, and good as Bear Claw un- In my opinion, able to win again. Desert Chief should win this without being fully extended, with Bear Claw second and King's Warden third.

SECTION) HALF A MILE New subscription griffins of this year will try conclusions in this race, and in view of the short distance any- thing is liable to happen. Here again, I would recommend taking café. ful note of the draw for positions. Out of the thirty ponies drawn for in this section, I don't think we need look fur- ther than the following for the even- tual winner:-Chatterbox (Mr. Tao) Marksman Kut Cheong (Mr. Woo), (Mr. Tang Man Wa), Portrush (ME. Encarnacao) and Smiling Time (Mr. Pote-Hunt.)

I understand that Chatterbox and Marksman will start in the Valley Stakes instead, and so I will leave. them out of consideration here. But should either of them run in this race, then bear them in mind, as both are among the best of this year's sub- scription griffins.

Kut Cheung is a fast moving anímal, but the pony to watch is Portrush I think the finish will be fought out between these two, with Portrush having the better of the argument, leaving Smiling Time to fill third posi tion.

RACE NO. 6 WONG-NEI-CHONG STAKES (SECOND SECTION) · HALF A MILE:

The result should be fought out be tween the following: - February Fourth (Mr. Wong), High Tower (Mr. Woo), Patriotic Day (Mr. Chiu); Sea Captain (Mr. Proulx) This Time. (Mr.) Poto-Hunt),

PA Blaisdon (Mr. Black) and Strathbannock.

High Tower is certainly looking very fit, and unless it should meet with strong opposition from February Fourth, I am looking forward to see It winning this race. High Tower seems to like running, but February Fourth appears quite powerful, and an upset here is quite possible. The other, pony to watch is Sea Captain, which Can also move fairly fast.

The first position will probably, be fought out between High Tower and February Fourth, with Sea Captain taking third place, and as an outsider I fancy This Time. RACE NO. 7. SYDNEY MAIDÉN: SPARES (SECOND SECTION)
