Independence With Guarantees For Jews?

London, To-day. Although the Palestine Conference generally is re- garded as having reached an impasse, pending an authoritative statement on behalf of the Bri- tish Government, Arab circles profess to see in the statement of Ali Maher Pasha on behalf of the surrounding Arab states, some departure from the uncompromising attitude which he had hitherto adopted.

It is said that the Egyptian leader in the course of his statement agreed on a modified form of guarantee for the Jewish minority in Palestine in the event of independence being granted.

It is asserted also that whereas hitherto the Arabs have had in mind the immediate establishment of an independent state in Pales- tine, the Egyptian leader hinted at a transition period which should precede the grant of full indepen- dence.

Arab quarters declare that he spoke with the full assent of the neighbouring states and the Pales- tinian Arabs.

GOVERNMENT SUSPECT?

British Wireless says that during the defence debate yesterday Mr. Attlee contended that the full strength of the country in man- power and service was not being enlisted because so many were dis- couraged and hesitant, feeling that the present Government was in- capable of making a stand for the things they believed Britain should stand for in the world.

Mr. Chamberlain appealed for less suspicion at home regarding foreign countries.

"Perhaps it would not be a bad thing if we ourselves were to show a little more confidence and not al- low ourselves to believe every tale that comes to us about the aggres sive intentions of others,”-

Mr. Chamberlain referred to Mr. Winston Churchill as "Bogey Num- ber One" abroad.-British Wireless.
