THE DAILY SHORT STORY

LUCKY LADY

Mrs. Harris glanced at her watch as always sartastic when' she kept him she came out of Betty's Beauty Salon waiting ILON Three-thirty. A frown crossed her There was only one course open. To face. The car was parked in the space be- hind the building where the salon was located. Pedestrians and motorists alike glared at her as she shot out into the traffic. There was, of course, the chance that, once she got out of the city, she could gain time by speeding. A ten-minute wait wouldn't make John too mad. At fifteen he usually began pacing the floor. At twenty he most always, swore under his breath. At twenty-five he began making vows and 'threats. At thirty-well, at thirty, John was hard to get along with.

Mrs. Harris brakes screamed as she stopped barely in time to avoid crash- ing into a truck. No sense to this, she told herself grimly. An accident or being arrested would make matters

worse.

It was Saturday. The traffic was heavy. By the time she reached open country it was twelve minutes to four. And still more than fifteen miles to

go!

Mrs. Harris made a U túrn and started back toward Philadelphia. Without realizing it she sent the spec- dometer needle up beyond sixty, Her mind raced even faster. How would she explain to John? What if John got so mad he refused to let her have the new fur coat he had promised? That would be like him. Suppose she were arrested? Would they believe her story?

Suddenly her blood froze." behind came the high-pitched scream of a siren. She glanced into the rear view mirror. A motorcycle policeman was rounding a curve in hot pursuit. A resigned feeling took possession of her. What was the use? No sense in trying to escape,Only make mat- ters worse.

She stopped. The motorcycle poli- ceman swung im ahead, dismounted, walked back, shoving up his goggles.

The speedometer needle crept, up to fifty, to fifty-five, and stayed there. There was still a good deal of traffic, but not enough to bother. It was exact ly 4 o'clock when she reached! Haines-

ville, eight miles this side of Dearborn, Mrs. Harris sighed. It wasn't going to be too bad. She opened, they glove compartment and rummaged for her cigarettes. But there weren't any cigarettes. The glove compartment, in fact, was empty!

"yeah?" said the cop, looking at her curiously "Well, lady, set your mind at rest. You don't need to Worry no more."

Do you have to be sarcastic?" Mrs. Harris said. That, too, sounded in- adequate, and for the life of her she couldn't think why she had said it.

The Uncer scratched his head. “By golly, lady, you don't know how lucky you are." "

Mrs. Harris opened her mouth to re- ply but just then an automobile drove
