An old brick arch which "för 140 years has carried road traffic over the Stratford-on-Avon, Canal atTM Alicester Road South, Birmingham, is to be demolished to make way for a new bridge. Before it dis appears, however, the old bridge is being tested to breaking point. Photo shows an expert taking readings under the arch of the de- flection under strain on all points of the arch. About 200 tons_pres- sure were applied to the bridge.

BEAT CALF TO DEATH

For beating a calf to death with 30 iron tool, Richard Powning, eighteen, farmer, of Cambourne, Cornwall, was fined £21 at Cam- bourne.
The chairman of the Bench said that but for Powning's youth he would have been sent to prison.
Mr. E. Thomas, for the R.S.P,C.A., declared that Powning had shown sheer, nauseating cruelty.
For Powning, Mr. E. E. Thrall submitted that the youth had acted out of kindness.
The calf was in the last throes of a disease, and Powning, in his first attempt at slaughtering, had lost his head.
