“HOBO” DEFINED BY THEIR KING

Jeff Davis, "King and World Emperor of Ho- boes," estimates there are 1,000,000 hoboes, 500,000 tramps and 50,000 beggars among the population of the United States.

These facts appear in the "1939 Year Book of the Hoboes of America," published in Chicago- where being a hobo is taken seriously.

“A hobo," according to this, manual, “is a Gentleman of the Road. The name is derived from the Latin homa (means man) and bonas (means good), i.e., good

Davis, who was in Britain last February, refers to the distinction between a hobo, tramp and beggar.

"A hobo will work," he says. “A tramp won't. and a beggar couldn't if he wanted to: A hobo believes the world owes him an opportun- ity. A tramp thinks the world owes him a living. The beggar just exists."
