Programme of building fifty new ships a year for the next ten years mercantile to "rejuvenate their marine," is in hand by the United States Maritime Commission. ··

Having already placed contracts for fifty modern passenger and car- go vessels, the Commission pro- poses for 1939 the construction of three new passenger liners at cost of £20,000,000.

These vessels are intended for the Pacific Ocean service. It is understood that the Commission in- tends during -1939 to concentrate on West Coast shipping.
