DISASTROUS FLOODS IN THE TRANSVAAL
Johannesburg, To-day. Disastrous floods in the Trans- vaal yesterday were sweeping over the town of Barbeton.
Up till last evening, 40 persons were reported drowned, but this figure may increase in the course of the night as the water is still rising.
Rescue work is encountering great difficulty.
An incident in a barrack-room at Stanley on Jan- uary 10 in which an officer and a bombardier were involved, had a further development this morning when Captain D. L. S. Northcote, Royal Artillery, appeared before a Court- Martial.
The court comprised Col. E. S. White, D.S.O., Pre- sident, Lieut. Col. M. S. Teversham, of the Raj- putana Rifles, Major G. S. Rawstone, and Major R. M. V. Denton, Royal Artillery.
