Accuracy Vs. Power

By BEST BALL

Those golfers who consider a long drive the most essential, part of their game should consider the manner in which Ralph Guldahl won his second National Open title recently. While other golfers were driving into the rough and kindred sorts of trouble, Guldahl was using his irons off the tee and placing the ball straight as an arrow down the fairway. For days prior to the actual tournament, Guldahl played over the layout, studying it closely as well as the potentialities of every type of shot in relation to each hole.

Guldahl came to the conclusion that little was to be gained by booming tee shots, but that ac- curately hit irons would keep the score down. He adhered to this purpose during the entire four rounds of the tournament. While other golfers were trying to steer ending up in the rough, Guldahl their woods down the middle and

was keeping on the fairway: total score of 284 represented par figures for the four rounds. Gul- dahl's putting too was of a high quality in this tournament and probably accounted for the fact
