Middlesex Beaten In Senior League

(By “UBIQUE)

Royal Navy negotiated yet an- other hurdle in their quest for First Division League honours when they defeated Middlesex at Sookun- poo yesterday by the odd goal in three. Their win, however, was far from convincing as the soldiers. had as much of the play, but were dogged by bad luck during several stages of the game.

The soldiers' attack was much livilier than the sailors' and, but.. for the stout defence offered by, Newby and Still, the Navy backs, should have won. Even then,}" Middlesex had ample opportunities to score. The tendency of their wingers to be off-side, however, robbed them of several chances.

Three Interporters were on view, Sheehan, of the Middlesex, and Dixon and Honeywill, of the Navy. If the form displayed by Sheehan yesterday is any indica- tion of what he will provide in the Interport game, then the selectors must be congratulated on their choice.

He played a great game through- out, covering well and kicking cleaning, his tackling leaving no- thing to be desired. He was the out- standing obstacle to the Navy at- tack.

Dixon, the Navy pivot, did not reproduce that sparkle which has featured a number of his games. He was definitely not at his best.

Honeywill, at right half, did not have a chance to shine against the Middlesex left-wing combination, Marrabelle and Saw, who had him in difficulties for the greater part of the game. Only the display of Newby, at left-back, prevented a bigger score from this quarter.

Navy's backs were outstanding, Two practice hockey matches and Newby caught the eye with hefty kicking, Still have been arranged for the 15 his
