TO VISIT SIAM AND INDO-CHINA
Singapore, Jan. 31,
The Governor of the Straits Set- tlements, Sir Shenton Thomas, is on his way to Siam and will afterwards visit French Indo-China.
Although it is stated the tour has no political significance, observers consider that it cannot fail to in- crease goodwill between Malaya and her neighbours to the north.
The Governor left Port Sweeten- ham yesterday, after attending the cornation of the Sultan of Selangor.
After three days in Bangkok, Sir Shenton Thomas will visit the ruins of Angkor Wat and will visit Phom- Penh, Saigon and the hill station of Dalat before returning to Singapore from Saigon by Netherlands plane on Feb. 15.-Reuter.
U.S. In Urgent Need Of PUPPET PAPER TO Powerful Navy, Air Force BE SUSPENDED
Washington, February 1.
"The United States is compelled to arm itself against those who are decided to dominate the world by force," War Under-Secretary Louis Johnson declared this evening in the course of a radio broad- cast.
"To some people, the invasion of America may seem nothing nature but a bad dream. Yet even these people must admit that what ap-
peared to be a fantasy yesterday has become the reality of to-day,” he continued.
An accident of a minor occurred at the Valley this morning in the course of training. Mr. S. W. Lee, a novice jockey, took out his
own pony, The Leopard, formerly owned by Messrs. Tester and Abra- ham, and on nearing the half mile post the pony was seen to stumble, unseating the rider. Mr. Lee, 'how- ever, escaped with no injury to him- self, and he was seen 'riding again later in the morning.
RECREIO LOSE TO SHANGHAI TENNIS TEAM
"Because of the immense stretch of our coasts along two sea- boards, and because of our distant possessions, we must have a Navy inferior to no other country's.
"Because of our responsibilities in the Western hemisphere, in accordance with the Monroe Doctrine, we need a powerful Air Force
which will permit the United States to face any threat.” Havas.
