BRITAIN MAY RETURN COLONIES TO GERMANY
Mr. Chamberlain Reported Ready For Discussions
London, Feb. 1.
Mr. Chamberlain, well-informed Conservative quarters declared to-day, is now ready to discuss the transfer to Germany of her former colonies pro- vided that the Reich in return agrees to sign a con- vention for the limitation of armaments.
This morning's Cabinet session was devoted to Herr Hitler's speech and the Spanish problem.
It was understood that certain members of the Government complained about the erroneous and alarming predictions made at the Foreign Office in regard to the Fuehrer's Reichstag address.
The Cabinet decided in the course of the meeting that it would pur- sue its policy of appeasement and conciliation, but at the same time would intensify Britain's rearma- ment.
With regard to Spain: the Minis- ters proposed to stand by their pre- sent policy, it was learned, because reports from Burgos confirmed their conviction that Nationalist victory was certain.
Furthermore, the Ministers were assertedly convinced that General- issimo Franco, was determined not to tolerate the continued presence of foreign soldiers on Spanish soil once the civil war is over.
